I took this photo a few years ago, and asked a friend to explain what showed up. He said the ghostly image was simply the camera’s flash against moisture in the air. The original photo was rotated 50 degrees to the left, so the creature (?) was horizontal. Either way, it looks like something other than light on moisture to me.

I was at Kimmel Harding Nelson last year and my roommate at the colony was a visual artist who had done a long project photographing the projects of those who attempt to document ghosts. V interesting/meta in itself, but… she also analyzes photos of UFOs to see what the photos show and has never found one that cannot be explained as your friend has done. At the same time, she wouldn’t say they didn’t see what they thought they saw. She would only say that the photo can explained in other terms. So, my question would be… not what does the photo document, but what did you see and feel? Obviously you took that photo for a reason. And that reason is what the after-the-fact explanations of UFO photos (light refracting from the flash on blah blah, usually, also) seem to miss–ie, WHY was the person aiming the lens in that way in the first place? Not that I am arguing for UFOs OR ghosts, just saying that the story, or the experience matters. Or doesn’t.

Thanks so much for the reply. I like your perspective. Of course I took the photo for a reason and that might be because something I couldn’t see attracted me. I’m certain I was only photographying fog. I wouldn’t have been outside otherwise. I do look for ghosts and spirits and signs of life we can’t see, though, and you’re right that expectations can give shape. I don’t mind that. My world is pretty rich (scary, sometimes).
